Amidst the worry over infection, it is very valid to ask if Corona Virus can be spread in a swimming pool. The Health and safety of all pool and spa users is always paramount but especially now.
However, the good news is that so long as the usual recommended hygiene standards are upheld, there is no increased risk.
Owners/Managers of Swimming pools, hot tubs and spas should always follow the guidelines for their particular type/size. This is still the case. They must refer to the relevant product guides for details.
Chlorine levels should be maintained. If applied correctly, the chlorine will kill germs, including those associated with Covid-19.
SPATA Guidance.
SPATA – The swimming Pool and Allied Trades Association – has published the following update directed at the swimming pool industry regarding Coronavirus (COVID-19). This provides specific details of the current government guidance relating to companies who operate in the pools and spas industry.
The advice from Swim England is:
… visitors to swimming pools are reminded to shower before using the pool, to shower on leaving the pool and to follow the necessary hygiene precautions when visiting public places to help reduce the risk of infection.”
The hygiene precautions are the same as the general advice given by the government:
- Wash hands for at least 20 seconds.
- Cover mouth and nose if you sneeze or cough.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- If you feel unwell or display Corona virus symptoms, do not use the pool facilities but go home.
Stick to the rules regarding chlorination levels and hygiene = safe swimming!
