Do you exercise more since the start of the pandemic?

Over the past 12 months, with strict restrictions imposted on our daily lives as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many of us have searched for alternative ways to look after both our mental and physical wellbeing whilst keeping to the latest government guidelines. Exercise is well documented for offering a wide range of health benefits such as keeping us fit , helping to improve our cardio vascular and general circulation, and also for releasing those “feel good” endorphins that lift our spirits. Never has exercise been more important than right now. In fact, during lockdowns when gyms and other sports and leisure facilities were forced to close, a study conducted by the running brand Asics in June 2020 identified a significant increase in the number of people who laced up new running shoes and took to the roads and trails. The study looked at 14,000 runners across 12 countries during the pandemic and they identified that over 36% of people globally were exercising more than before the Coronavirus pandemic. In the UK, the figure was 43% during lockdown periods.

Running or Swimming?

Of course running is not for everyone; particularly now that the colder winter weather has arrived and the days are shorter than during the first lockdown. If you have an injury or other medical conditions that rule may out even a gentle jog as part of your exercise plan. For those who are fortunate enough to have a swimming pool at their home, they have the perfect opportunity to maintain their fitness and wellbeing without having to buy running shoes and brace the elements outside.

Swimming provides a more gentle exercise alternative to running but can provide equal health benefits. As a supported form of exercise, swimming can keep your heart rate up but without the impact to joints that comes with running. Regular swimming also builds endurance, increases and enhances your muscle strength and improves overall cardiovascular fitness. And with many of us working from home, or for those children who are home schooling, it helps us to maintain a healthy weight at a time when we may not be burning as many calories during our daily lives as normal.
